The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, a substantial 1,215-bed tertiary NHS and military hospital, is situated in the Edgbaston neighborhood of Birmingham, adjacent to the University of Birmingham. The hospital, which replaced Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital, was constructed for £545 million and inaugurated on June 16, 2010. It is a member of one of the largest teaching institutions in England and is one of the largest single-site hospitals in the United Kingdom. It is named after Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who was King George VI’s consort and wife from 1936 until his death in 1952.
