    What does the UK include?

The UK is made up of four constituent countries:

    CountryCapitalNotes
    EnglandLondonLargest and most populated
ScotlandEdinburghHas its own parliament and legal system
WalesCardiffHas its own parliament and language (Welsh)
Northern IrelandBelfastShares the island of Ireland with the Republic of Ireland (which is a separate country)

Common confusion: UK vs. Great Britain vs. England

    TermDefinition
United Kingdom (UK)England + Scotland + Wales + Northern Ireland (the full sovereign state)
Great BritainThe island that contains England, Scotland, and Wales (does NOT include Northern Ireland)
EnglandJust one of the four countries within the UK

    Example:

    • Someone from Scotland or Wales is British and from the UK, but they are not English.
    • “Great Britain” is a geographical term (the island), not a political one.

    The UK in the world

    • It is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
    • It is a nuclear power.
    • It was a member of the European Union (EU) until it left on January 31, 2020 (Brexit).
    • It is a constitutional monarchy – the King is the head of state, but the Prime Minister and Parliament run the government.
    • The UK is made up of four countries, each with its own distinct culture, history, and in some cases, legal and educational systems.

    Historical context

The UK was formed through a series of unions:

    • 1536: England and Wales united.
    • 1707: England and Scotland united to form Great Britain.
    • 1801: Great Britain and Ireland united to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
    • 1922: Most of Ireland became independent (now the Republic of Ireland), leaving Northern Ireland as part of the UK.
